MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that for his late father to truly rest in peace, he must continue the work that his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., started.

In a speech following a Mass before his father’s grave at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on All Saints’ Day, Marcos said it won’t be enough to just wish rest in peace for his dad.

“You know when we have a dead person, ‘RIP’ — rest in peace — is placed there. Of course, that’s what we want for my father. But it’s not enough to just say rest in peace,” the president said in mixed Filipino and English.

“For my father to rest in peace, we need to continue the work he started. Let’s continue to make the Philippines better and love the Philippines,” he added.

Marcos also thanked the members of One Movement Inc., a group that supports her mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, for their presence and for paying respects to the late dictator.

“That’s why our Undas became more meaningful because of your arrival. And especially because we feel your love and remembrance for my father. Many, many thanks to all of you,” he said.

On September 28, 1989, Marcos Sr. died in Hawaii, where he was exiled after being overthrown from Malacañang by Filipinos via the Edsa People Power Revolution.

He was buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in November 2016.
